Apparently Yahoo! has taken a break from its self-inflicted implosion agenda. I was surprised to see in today’s Wall Street Journal the announcement “Amid Turmoil, Yahoo Jumps Into Browser Wars“. The WSJ is usually not the first place I hear about new technology, but this caught me unaware. I’d not even heard rumors of it.
Yahoo Senior Vice President of Connections Shashi Seth said “With Axis, we have redefined and re-architected the search and browse experience from the ground up”. Yet while on mobile devices, Axis is a full browser application, apparently the desktop version is a plugin. I have it running in Firefox right now. When using across devices, your browsing history moves with it, which is neat. I like what I have seen thus far, but it’s more evolutionary than revolutionary.
PC Mag reviewed it yesterday and gave it 3.5/5 stars or “good”. They noted an apparent security flaw with the Chrome version, which Yahoo! updated earlier today. Chrome took the lead from IE earlier this week as the most popular browser.
