At Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference this week, they are announcing Windows Server 2008 R2 in the Azure cloud.
They discussed the delivery of Windows Server instances in three “roles”:
- Web role, where you get an IIS 7.5 instance, which I consider to be a SaaS offering.
- Admin role, where you get a Windows server. I think this analogous to PaaS term.
- VM role, where you build and maintain your own servers. I see this as analogous to the IaaS concept. You can upload your own server images.
The presentation and Powerpoints are available here at the PDC site.
