One-on-one meetings are short, periodic (weekly or bi-weekly) meetings between a manager and his direct. I have been doing these meetings for over a decade with my team, but I must credit Mark Horstman and Mike Auzenne, co-founders of Manager Tools LLC, with articulating and maturing the concept. When I first heard their podcast “One-on-Ones: The Single Most Effective Management Tool” I felt validated and energized.
One-on-ones are critical for building rapport, establishing relationships, coaching and tracking progress. They also provide significant input into the performance management process.
