Form 8879 e-Filing

My tax preparer sent back my return this week with a note attached:

The Internal Revenue Service is now requiring preparers that prepare 100 tax returns on an annual basis to begin filing those returns electronically. Therefore I have prepared the necessary Form 8879 and attached it to this letter for your signature…. Once I receive the Form 8879 I will electronically file the return on your behalf.

It just now occurred to me I have been blindly shipping a paper return all these years, dealing with crowded post offices, certified mail charges, and arguments with the IRS as to whether I sent on time. Why hasn’t the IRS mandated this before now?! You’d think it’d be in everyone’s best interests…
