vSAN

The End of the SAN?

So after years of pushing shared storage devices to support clustered hosts of virtual machines, VMware now says the future of storage is direct-attached SDS (software-defined storage). Their new Virtual SAN (vSAN) product creates an ad hoc SAN out of three servers with internal disk arrays running the software. Introduced in beta last fall, vSAN is now ready to go….

Who won? Romney? Obama? Cisco?

We can argue over the winner of the first presidential debate, but Cisco gets to claim they powered it.  They can also take credit for “connecting the US National Conventions”. Catching up on more relevant news, Cisco is leaving their load-balancer product, ACE (Application Control Engine). My primary exposure to load-balancers – now referred to as ADCs (application delivery controllers) –…

So Long TMG (aka ISA)

Microsoft formally announced the pasturing of the Forefront line including TMG (formerly ISA Server) as of December 1. UAG, short for “Unified Access Gateway”, stays on as the successor. UAG is NOT just a renaming of TMG (as TMG was with ISA, and as ISA was with Microsoft Proxy); rather it is a separate product built by an Israeli company…

GoDaddy Outage

GoDaddy experienced a major outage yesterday morning which Anonymous originally claimed responsibility for. Network World reported an attack affecting GoDaddy’s DNS servers and that they temporarily redirected its DNS traffic for GoDaddy.com to VeriSign. However, it now appears to be a run of the mill screw-up according to the news release on their site. The service outage was not caused by…

Unwinding Cisco certs

Tech Republic published a PDF today written by Bunron Chen at OpenSesame that attempts to unwind the confusing tangle of Cisco certifications. It’s not super clear, but it is something, and it has links to the Cisco site. Also, Packet Pushers posted a good show explaining the CCNP cert.

Nicira

VMWare today (well, yesterday) announced their decision to acquire small start-up Nicira. Nicira is an SDN vendor I had not heard of until now, but pundits attribute today’s 6% loss in Cisco’s stock to this purchase that apparently makes VMWare a competitor. (Earlier this week, Cisco had a big layoff too.) Nicira states their sole mission is to “Virtualize the network”….

SDN makes the WSJ

I am one of those WSJ junkies – I get it via old-fashioned-paper in my driveway, the website, the tablet edition, and audio via Audible, which I listen to every morning on my way to work. I was very surprised to hear it mention SDN – software defined networking (aka “OpenFlow”) – in a newsbite on this morning’s drive in….

Wifi Ruckus

A customer asked my engineering team to evaluate a new product this week – wifi gear from Ruckus Wireless. I had never really heard about the company or products short of references to their entertaining ad (above) that got some buzz by featuring a mock evangelical Baptist preacher – and then a follow-up mock apology for the content. Looking at the web…

Venus Transit 2012

Musings on the past week

The Venus Transit, market rebound, high-profile court cases, and the IPv6 Launch Day seemed to be the headline acts this week. I am not an astronomy buff or even a wannabe, but the back-to-back events (Transit and solar eclipse) only two weeks apart caught my attention. And of course provide great graphics for posts. After last week’s disappointing jobs report, the…

This Time It Is For Real!

So a year after World IPv6 Day comes World IPv6 Launch Day. Last June 11, a coterie of Internet heavyweights performed a global test flight by configuring around 1000 sites to run IPv6 for a day – “World IPv6 Day”. Today, the same participants are sponsoring “Launch Day” under the catchy tagline “This time it is for real”, where they…
