NYSE outage

The New York Stock Exchange experienced the longest outage in recent memory yesterday. The NYSE president stated “The root cause was determined to be a configuration issue”, which is management-speak for someone didn’t follow change management and/or forgot to test. Luckily for IT, the WSJ reported that other more urgent crises (e.g., Greece, China) made it a non-event.    …

NANO-SERVER

Windows Nano Server

On the Technet Windows Server blog this week, M$ announced the Nano Server version (code name Tuva) of the new Windows Server 2016 which is even more stripped down than Server Core version of 2012R2. The smaller footprint means less maintenance and less security exposure, Microsoft estimates 92% few critical bulletins and 80% fewer reboots. The smaller footprint means smaller…

Free tools

Just caught up on a few webinars and RunAs Radio podcasts highlighting free utilities. I downloaded and played with a few of these and they look really good… Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit: The MAP Toolkit is an agentless inventory, assessment, and reporting tool that can securely assess IT environments for various platform migrations. Active Directory Replication Status Tool: ADREPLSTATUS analyzes the replication…

Apple’s announcement of “The MacBook”

I was largely disappointed in yesterday’s Apple announcements. I don’t care about the watch and it’s arguably not relevant to enterprise IT, so I am not going to even address it. My disappointment comes from the announcement of the “stunning” gold “The MacBook” and the lack of any mention of upgrades to the MacBook Pro Retina 15″. In regards to…

AAPL Joins the Dow

Dow Jones & Company announced yesterday it was booting ATT from its Dow Jones Industrial Average of 30 stocks and replacing it with Apple. Tucked in between the hacking of Apple Pay and tomorrow’s Apple Watch announcement, this is a big deal.

GM Insourcing?

Glad to read about some IT insourcing in today’s WSJ’s “Why GM Hired 8,000 Programmers“. GM recently ended an outsourcing arrangement with HP and is starting up an ecommerce effort by the name of “Shop-Click-Drive” where customers can order their GM cars online. The article explains why online car shopping hasn’t worked in the past and how GM hopes it…

Obama’s Security Summit

Obama, Apple’s Tim Cook, and other industry luminaries gathered yesterday at Stanford for a first-of-its kind “cybersecurity summit” following legislation announced just before year-end. Cook was the only high-tech CEO in attendance, but he was joined by senior management from American Express, Facebook, Google, Intel, Kaiser Permanente, PayPal, and Yahoo. Obama announced his new executive order encouraging the development of central clearinghouses…

MBPr Still Tops

PCMag’s 10 Best Laptops just came out again. The MacBook Pro still tops the list as the Editor’s Choice of Editors Choices.  The $1189 intro price is still misleading because (1) it’s really not available with a 128G SSD and (2) you’re really going to want the 512G option. So plan on $2300 + AppleCare + tax + Ethernet adapter…
