Advice on collapsing layers

The Packet Pushers Podcast #50 provides a good discussion on collapsing network layers. Vendors now seem to be pushing this architecture over the three layered switch design (i.e., core-aggregation-access) which I described here to account for changes in traffic patterns wrought by server virtualization. This is the theory behind the new fabric-concept espoused by Cisco and Juniper.
